Banned Music

Banned Music  By: Ryan Darling  Protecting others from Music: When I was younger I can remember my mom letting me listen to "Yeah"by Usher and "In the Club" by 50 cent.  I loved those songs and still do but my father hated the songs and never let me listen to them.  I never understood why this was until I got older and understood what the songs meant.  Now that I have a little sister who is nine and she listens to my music I am more careful what I play around her as to not let her hear some of the words that are not meant for younger ears.  For example there is a song by ASAP Ferg called "Plain Jane" which I enjoy and Grace my sister loves as well the song is not clean and should not be listen to by nine year olds but I sometimes just don't care to censor the song because I don't want to lose the enjoyment of listening to it.  The experience made me think twice about the words that were being said and the meaning.  I used to not really c

Banned Books

Banned Books  By:Ryan Darling  Books:             When thinking about banned books I imagine books that have bad or sexual language that is not appropriate  for younger readers.  I was very surprise to find To Kill A Mocking Bird  was on that list.  I remember reading that freshman year of high school and I thought it was a great book.  looking back I can see why it was banned.  Due to the racial discrimination that is going on in the book, but that was part of the time when this book was set. I think that it is very harmful to make books such as ones depicting history as it was such as To Kill A Mocking Bird or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.   those books are important for us to see how it was like in the times it was set in.  If we sensor those books it takes away from the learning that can be achieved from seeing the mistakes of our grandparents so that we know never to repeat it again.   Thinking about the books on my own shelves and in my phone I mostly read

Ryan Darling  Journalism Blog Project 2 Get Out  Get Out By: Ryan Darling              It is very rare for a directors first movie to become a smash hit and even more unlikely that they would win any awards for it.  But with his award-winning debut of his first film “Get Out” Jordan Peele shocked the whole world with his directorial talents and his writing chops.              Get Out, which is a horror/thriller movie was written and directed by Jordan Peele, who you may know from his YouTube channel Key and Peele or his comedy central show of the same name.  Get out stars a Black photographer named Chris Washington, who is dating a white woman named Rose Armitage.  She takes him home to meet her family.  The first half of the movies portrays white liberals trying to have meaningful social interaction with a black man, which does not go so well.  The second half of the movie turns out that Rose’s parents are running a slave action with Chris as the new target.  An old w

Newspapers

Newspapers  By: Ryan Darling Local news, the backbone of the media and the also in the eyes of many the least credible.  Local news comes in many different forms from the local paper to the local news station, even radio.  I get my local news every weekday morning from KGW News, which is an affiliate of NBC.  KGW news today talked about the South Valley Fire burning near Dufur, which grew to 20,000 acres. https://www.kgw.com/article/weather/wildfires/south-valley-fire-burning-near-dufur-grows-to-20000-acres/283-579445373.  The clip stated that the fire burned at least one structure and between 80 and 100 homes are in danger of burning.  Forcing at least 400 people to evacuate.  I also get my daily News from the Today show which comes on right after the local news I just talked about.  I use the Today show to inform me of the world wide news that they cover which has included political events, social events and tragedies such as the volcano activity in Hawaii.  I rely on bo

Freedom of Speech

Week 5 Freedom Of Expression                 Freedom of expression to me is, being able to say and do what you want within the law and not be prosecuted for it.  In the RIP movie I felt to conflicted between two arguments about how the copyright system is way to overbearing and was especially influenced by Disney to extend it to make sure they could keep the monopoly on Micky and others.  But I also believe that if you create something that it should be yours and yours alone you came up with it by yourself so why should anyone else get to profit off it or use it for themselves without paying you for it.  There was a part in the movie RIP the I could not agree with and that was when the daycare was using Micky and other Disney characters likeness and Disney got made and sued them for it.  I felt that it was a bit much and Also the daycare never said that it was Micky therefor it could have been any mouse and friends.  the copy right law is full of gray areas for me because

Ryan Darling Journalism 201 Blog Project #1 Professor Priewe It’s A Tide Ad Description  During the 2018 Super Bowl there were quite a few great commercials that stuck with the audience.  There were beer commercials, car commercials and of course commercials about  Amazon’s ALEXA.   But among all of those great commercials there was one that stuck out to me and many others.  This ad was funny, well timed and perfectly executed.  The ad I am referring to of course is the Tide ad.  The ad begins as the sun is setting on a beautiful mountain road as an unmarked car is rushing by, as the camera cuts inside the car to your surprise David Harbour who plays (Chief Hopper on  Stranger Things ) starts talking to you about how this is “just your typical Super Bowl car ad right?”  cut to the next scene and a beer is sliding down the bar to again David Harbour, only to have it fall off the bar and the whole bar laughs.  The next scene looks like a glimpse into haven Where Davi

ADS Week3

By: Ryan Darling  Details: This week we were tasked to find a brand that is using social media to promote their brand in a very effective way.  I chose IHop or IHob now,  this company if you didn't already know is known as a breakfast chain around the world.  recently they decided to change their name from IHop to IHob.  Ihop standing for international house of pancakes and IHob standing for international house of burgers.  They made this change to show that they are not just a pancake restaurant but they also serve great burgers.  What was really amazing was their marketing.  They could have just said on twitter of facebook "Hey Ihop here,  just letting you all know we server burgers too." But instead they did something remarkable,  they changed the name of their store which started a media explosions the likes of which we have never seen.  Instead of spending advertising dollars on making commercials and ads they had people spread the word for them.  In Seth G
